Life Membership conferred on Ian Burgess

May 01, 2017, 09:29 AM AEST

At the Annual General Meeting held Sunday, 30 April, the members of Volleyball Victoria Inc voted unanimously in support of the Board resolution to confer life membership to Ian Burgess.

Elizabeth Tupper, Vice President, extended the Board’s congratulations to Ian and looks forward to an appropriate opportunity to make a formal presentation.
An extract of the Life Membership resolution is below:

Ian Burgess has held the role of Treasurer for Latrobe Valley Volleyball Inc (LVVI) and the Morwell Community Volleyball Competition for more than 25 years.  His efforts for LVVI and Morwell Community Volleyball has ensured decades of continuous volleyball in the region.

Ian is also the administrator of the Gippsland Regional League (GRL) and has held this position since the League inception over 30 years ago.  As administrator of GRL, Ian single-handedly coordinates team entries, fixtures, results, stadium bookings, trophies, and all the other necessary activities.  Ian is noted for his effective communication with Gippsland Volleyball Associations in his administration of the League.

Further, Ian is actively involved in the hosting of the Australian National Junior Women’s Development camp which LVVI has hosted for several years and continues to serve on the advisory panel of the Gippsland Sports Academy Volleyball Program, an important pathway opportunity for volleyballers in the region.

Ian is an extremely humble man, willing to assist in all things volleyball in Gippsland and beyond.  Quite recently, he was sighted shortly before 9:00am mid-week at State Volleyball Centre where he spent the day refereeing.  He had responded to a request for referees in support of School Sport Victoria, and had made the journey from the Latrobe Valley, ensuring a quality experience for novices in our sport.

Ian is still playing in the local competition and regularly attends State League matches in which Latrobe Valley teams are competing.

In their 50th year, Latrobe Valley Volleyball saw fit to create a new category of recognition to accommodate Ian, and his contemporary, Howard Williams, to appropriately reflect their contribution to LVVI and the sport more broadly, inducted at the celebrations as ‘Legends of the Game’.
