Schools Cup – Three Day event

The premier schools’ event on the Volleyball Victoria calendar has been successfully conducted Friday to Sunday, 28-30 July, with Billanook College claiming the title of Champion School in a closely contested result.  The Champion School award aggregates the results of the teams garnering the highest points across both genders.  Eltham High School was narrowly pipped into second place, while 2017 Champion School, Mazenod, made up the top three.

Three days of competition across two venues, 22 courts, and 501 games contributed to this being one of the largest Schools Cup events hosted by Volleyball Victoria.  I commend Tim Heathcote, Events & Competitions Coordinator, and his very able support crew, including Katherine Walton, Events Officer, and the entire Office who helped bring the event together.

Thanks also to the Venue, Hall and, Court Supervisors, First Aid Officers, and all event personnel for your contributions in ensuring an event that was smoothly conducted and enjoyable for all participants.

Volleyball Victoria also thanks Australian Volleyball Warehouse as our primary event partner.  And to the schools who have again turned out in great numbers to compete hard but in good spirit, and for the positive feedback we have received during and since the weekend.

This year brought to an end in an official capacity the association of Greg Thomas (Eltham High School) and Rick McWaters (Girton Grammar School) with the Three Day event, both having announced their retirements from teaching.  Two keen patrons of Volleyball Victoria activities and in particular, long-time supporters of the Schools Cup events, Greg and Rick have coached hundreds of students throughout decades of involvement.

We wish Greg and Rick all the very best and look forward to utilising in new ways their knowledge of the sport.

VicHealth – Active Club Grants

Applications to the VicHealth Active Club Grants opened 31 July and will close 31 August.  The Grants focus on two focus areas: activities that “engage more women and girls in sport” and support for affiliates to “implement new social or modified sport programs that target less active Victorians”.

Volleyball Victoria is keen to support affiliates identify appropriate initiatives and make application for these Grants.  If you would like to know more about the grant scheme or discuss ideas, please contact Matt Berry, Development Coordinator, telephone 03 9794 0009 or email

Community Sports Infrastructure Loans Scheme

The Department of Health and Human Services, through Sport and Recreation Victoria has released an innovative loans scheme, Community Sports Infrastructure Loans Scheme, as part of the 2018-19 Victorian Budget.

In addition to the existing investment in community sports infrastructure, including the Community Sports Infrastructure Fund, Better Indoor Stadiums Fund, and the Female Friendly Facilities Fund.  “The scheme will support the delivery of community sport and recreation infrastructure by providing organisations access to government guaranteed loans between $500,000 and $10 million at significantly reduced interest rates”.

The objectives of the Loans Scheme include:

  • Increase opportunities for councils, clubs, associations, educational institutions and facility managers to invest in the development of community sport and recreation infrastructure, in addition to existing funding opportunities; and
  • Incentivise organisations such as local government to bring forward community sport and recreation infrastructure delivery

Volleyball Victoria identifies the release of this Loans Scheme as a great opportunity to improve access by volleyball into a range of existing and to be developed facilities.

Board Update

The Board advises that the State Facilities Strategy is nearing completion with a final draft to be presented to Sport and Recreation Victoria on 1 August.  This is a timely conclusion to the months long project coinciding with the release of the Community Sports Infrastructure Loans Scheme, as reported above.

Volleyball Victoria will be well-placed to understand, plan, and respond to demand for court space, partnering affiliates and external stakeholders to secure access to new and improved venues in key areas.

Participation and membership continue to track well in 2018, especially on the back of the recently completed Schools Cup – Three Day event.
