University Blues Volleyball’s Enduring Success!

The University Blues have once again claimed the Women’s title at the Australian Volleyball League Championships under the guidance of Steve Holder and his staff.  Congratulations to everyone involved at University Blues, particularly Steve, Rosemary Bissett, Gus Cirillo, and KC Chong with whom this Office has worked.

Over the last six years many people have contributed to the success of the franchise, from the origins of ‘Uni Blues’ to the current iteration, the franchise has been well-served and we acknowledge the efforts of all these individuals without trying to name them all and offend any we overlook.

Seven national titles, six consecutive titles, and five successful title defences is a remarkable achievement in any sport and any era.  For more information on the 2018 AVL Championships.

2019 Membership Fees

The Board has confirmed a prudent approach to membership, affiliation, and State League fees reflecting the annual increase of costs represented in the Consumer Price Index.  The adjustment is modest and typically represents not more than 1.8% for any one category, with a rounding for tax impacting the current Casual member class.

Volleyball Victoria will retain the categories of membership that has supported continual growth of more than 10% growth enjoyed in recent years.  This is all the more impressive with the membership year not concluding until 31 March.
The membership information will be updated early in the new year in time for renewals.

Board Update

Volleyball Australia Annual General Meeting

The Volleyball Australia Annual General Meeting (AGM) was hosted in Canberra 24 November with stakeholder meetings following on Sunday and Monday.  The outcome for the 2018 Financial Year was disappointing for Volleyball Australia and the sport more broadly with a significant loss reported.  A range of factors contributed to this result and the national Board has outlined their commitment to recovering the position.

Volleyball Victoria nominated Grant Hyde, partner with Deloitte and currently co-opted Board member, to the Volleyball Australia Board.  Grant is an extremely qualified nominee and was very interested in the responsibilities of the national Board.  Prior to the election, Grant’s nomination was withdrawn and the three incumbent Directors were returned without contest.  Grant was immediately invited to join the Volleyball Australia Board as an appointed Director and subsequently accepted the invitation.

We congratulate Grant and wish him all the very best in his new, national responsibilities.  We also look forward to the accessibility of a Victorian representative returning to the national Board.

On another very positive note, Liz Pollock was awarded Life Membership of Volleyball Australia.  In support of Liz’s nomination, I had the great pleasure in providing the following comments:

“Elizabeth (Liz) Pollock has been an extraordinary member of the Australian officiating cohort for over 28 years. In 2000 she was endorsed as an International Referee for Australia and while she is now retired from the international stage Liz is still highly active and continues to commit her time to better the sport, most recently as the National Technical Official Manager for the 2018 Volleyball Nations League held in Melbourne.

Liz has been an asset to the volleyball community being one of the key drivers involved in the restructure of the Volleyball Australia Referee Committee after being involved with the group for over 15 years and she remains a vital contributor to the work being done in the education space for officials. She won the Volleyball Australia referee of the year award in 2004/05 and was awarded a Life Membership with Volleyball Victoria in 2015.

While Liz is highly commended in the officiating community she has also been involved in many other areas of the sport, such as a player, coach and, a Board Member for Volleyball Victoria.”

It was a great privilege to speak on behalf of Liz’s nomination and the unanimous support of the AGM was testament to her place in the national volleyball landscape.  On behalf of the Board, the broader community, and personally, I congratulate Liz Pollock for this wonderful achievement.

Strategic measures

Participation and membership continue to improve with 2018 exceeding both 2017 levels and the 10% growth target for the year.  Volleyball Victoria remains engaged with key stakeholders, including current and prospective affiliates, State and local Governments, education institutions at all levels; primary, secondary, and tertiary in seeking to advance the sport.  Our State teams continue to improve on benchmark performances of the previous years, and numerous Victorians have been selected to national underage and open squads in playing, coaching, and officiating capacities.  Volleyball Victoria enjoys a position of strong financial sustainability and has met current compliance with governance regulations and now focuses on affiliate capacity building.

Seasons Greetings

On behalf of the Board, I would like to take this opportunity to wish our members, sponsors, and stakeholders a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

I extend heartfelt thanks to all our community for their efforts contributing to another successful year for volleyball in Victoria.  As outlined above in the Board update, numerous strategic measures and other achievements have been marked in 2018 and present the difficult, yet inviting challenge to further evolve in 2019.

The Office enjoys a modest break over summer, closing on Friday, 21 December and re-opening Monday, 7 January, gradually returning to full staffing through the month.  Stay safe and see you in the new year.
